Admissions/Placement Requirements
|
Freshmen and Transfer Students are required to meet the minimum UNLV admission standards in order to declare Pre-major standing in the College of Engineering.
The Colleges four-year degree plans expect that incoming students will be ready to take Calculus I (MATH 181) their first semester and carry a load of 14-18 credits each semester. Students who are not ready for Calculus I upon entry will be placed into the Pre-Engineering program until they have completed the necessary preparatory courses.
In order to be adequately prepared for the rigorous courses required by each major, prospective Engineering students are advised to complete the following preparatory courses either in high school, or at an approved college, prior to entering UNLV:
- Algebra I & II
- General Chemistry
- General Physics
- Geometry
- Trigonometry
Placement Guidelines for New Students
English and Math: Placement requirements for English and Math courses are based upon scores earned on the ACT/SAT tests, the ACT Residual Exam, or the English and Math Departments alternative placement options:
Important Notes:
- All students in the College of Engineering must register for an English and Math course every semester until all required courses are completed with a grade of C or higher.
- In order to take MATH 181 (Calculus I), and introductory courses in Engineering and Computer Science, students should have earned an appropriate placement score on the ACT/SAT/AP Exams, OR at least a C in MATH 95/96/97/126/127 or 128.
- Students are advised to take MATH 128 (Pre-Calculus I & II) [a 5-credit combination of MATH 126 and 127] only if they have previously taken this course material and need a comprehensive refresher course prior to taking MATH 181 (Calculus I).
- ENG 98, MATH 95 and MATH 96 are only offered during the summer semesters at UNLV. If a student waits to take this course in the Fall or Spring semester they will need to co-enroll at CCSN in order to obtain this course. Click here for more information on developmental courses.
- International students must take the placement exam in English as a Second Language (ESL) for proper placement in ESL courses. International students are expected to take ENG 113 and 114 to satisfy the Freshman Composition requirements. Please contact the English Language Center for testing information.
Chemistry: CHEM 121 is required for all Engineering majors, but is an elective science course for Computer Science majors. Readiness for CHEM 121 (General Chemistry I) is based upon a written departmental placement exam. Fore more information on the CHEM 121 Placement Exam please click here.
Important Notes:
- Students who have successfully completed the AP Chemistry Exam should bring their lab notebook to the Chemistry Department to have their lab credit approved
- Students who did not complete Chemistry in High School should take CHEM 103 (the equivalent of high school Chemistry) before taking CHEM 121
- Students who do not pass the Chemistry placement exam will have to take CHEM 103 and earn a C grade or higher prior to enrolling in CHEM 121
