Advisor & Student Responsibilities

Advisor Responsibilities

Academic Advisors are here to help guide you through your educational experience at UNLV. Advisors cannot make decisions for you, but they can help you develop the skills necessary to make autonomous and well informed academic, professional, and personal decisions for yourself. Academic Advisors can assist you with developing sound decision-making abilities for your academic and professional life by:
  • Helping you clarify your interests, values, and goals
  • Consulting with you about educational and career
  • Coaching you on the skills you will need to succeed in college and prepare for your career
  • Providing you with accurate information about policies and procedures
  • Providing you with an outline of degree requirements and regular progress reports
  • Referring you to various campus resources as needed

Student Responsibilities

Students are expected to take an active role in their educational experience at UNLV in order to optimize all the opportunities and services available to them. Remember: you will get out of your education what you put into it! In order to be a successful and proactive student, you should:
  • Read and learn the policies and requirements outlined in the UNLV Undergraduate Catalog and the UNLV Student Code of Conduct
  • Carefully read the UNLV Undergraduate Catalog to become knowledgeable of University and College requirements, policies, and procedures
  • Maintain contact with your Academic Advisor and Faculty Mentor throughout the year (you are required to meet with them at least TWICE a year)
  • Be prepared for your advising meeting by:
    • Having a list of questions ready
    • Bringing copies of your advising paperwork and transfer credit evaluation
      • TIP: you should keep TWO folders at home for your Advising and Financial Aid paperwork
  • Inform your Academic Advisor if you are:
    • Having difficulty with your courses
    • Thinking about dropping courses, changing your major, or withdrawing from school
    • Receiving any financial aid or scholarships
  • Regularly review your degree checklists and flowchart to check your progress
  • Be certain that all academic records and courses are transferred from other institutions to the UNLV Registrars Office, and that your DARS Report accurately reflects all of the classes you have completed
